A bit about me…

When traditional methods in school are not working, does it make sense to keep using the same approach? Using the Orton-Gillingham approach, I teach students to read and write with targeted strategies that help build success and confidence.

I became a teacher in 2006. I started my career in the Bahamas where I first began teaching students how to read in my kindergarten classroom. During this time, I ran an after school tutoring program where I helped primary and junior students in the various subjects they were learning in school.

After three years in this role, I moved on to become school councilor, where I became adept at helping students improve their socio-emotional well-being. I am skilled at helping to foster a growth mindset, which is essential for success in all aspects of education, as well as many aspects of life.

Upon returning to Canada, I haved worked primarily with the junior and intermediate grades where I have supported students with various learning disabilities. I became certified in special education and worked as an intermediate SERT, where I encountered many students with dyslexia.

I have seen the benefit of the Orton-Gillingham approach first hand. My daughter received a dyslexia diagnosis in grade one and has been tutored with Orton-Gillingham strategies ever since. As a mother, I understand the frustrations and concerns around having a child with a learning disability. While progress may be slow, it is consistent; and nothing beats seeing your child eager to read and watching their confidence grow!
